Before your student-athletes join their team on the field or your kids head to summer camp, you can visit any of our urgent care centers for a convenient, fast and affordable sports or camp physical.

What's Included in a Sports or Camp Physical

Sports physicals at UM Urgent Care include a thorough review of your child's medical history and complete physical exam. You should be prepared to discuss your child's past injuries and/or current treatments, conditions, allergies or medications with the provider during your visit.

We'll examine your child to determine whether they can be cleared to play their specific sport. This includes evaluating the following areas:

  • Abdomen
  • Blood pressure
  • Chest and lungs
  • Heart
  • Height and weight
  • Muscles, joints and spine
  • Reflexes and coordination
  • Vision and pupil responses

Please note that a sports or camp physical should not replace your child's annual physical with their primary care provider or family physician.

Also, UM Urgent Care is unable to provide or validate your child's immunizations. Your child's school may require you to include the immunization record along with the physical examination form.

What Happens If There Are Medical Issues

If our providers identify any medical issues that you may be unaware of, they'll discuss your options. You will have access to the highly certified specialists at our hospital partners if more consultation is needed.

Based on the diagnosis and treatment required, the student athlete may be placed into one of the following participation categories:

  • Unrestricted Participation - The student may play in the specified sport without any constraints.
  • Clearance With Coach Notification - The student athlete is cleared to play the sport, but special accommodations may be warranted in certain circumstances.
  • Deferred Clearance - Clearance cannot be given at this time, but a treatment plan will be put in place for future evaluation.
  • Disqualification - Participation in the sport is prohibited.

When to Get a Sports Physical

The best time to get your child's physical is six weeks before the sports season starts. If our team finds any injuries or conditions, six weeks will give the student time to be treated and recover.

If physicals are completed seven weeks or more before the season, conditions may develop between the exam time and when practices or tryouts start.

What to Bring to Your Child's Physical

You should bring the following to your sports or camp physical, in addition to payment:

  • A copy of the entire sports/camp physical form for the provider to review and sign.
  • Your child's prescription eye glasses or contacts if they wear them.
